RockneAR: 8thWall Scavenger Hunt

Rocknear Frank Leahy Gameplay Screencapture

Inspired by Notre Dame's loyal football fans, this smartphone- and tablet-friendly webAR scavenger hunt brings new life and interactability to the six sculptures of ND's legendary football coaches that surround the Fighting Irish stadium.

Using Niantic 8thWall's VPS positioning system (which some will recognize from Pokemon Go), the trio of designer have built a web-browser experience that empowers players to walk the ND campus in search of waypoints, where floating blue tokens point them to the location of the 6 statues. When players get within 20 meters, they can activate a unique AR animation by scanning the sculpture with their phone or tablet cameras.

Checking off each location on their Wayspot Logbook, players can circle round the stadium to finish the scavenger hunt, or save their progress and come back later. If you have ideas for what players should win or earn when they finish the scavenger hunt, reach out! We'd love to hear your thoughts.

Bonus: no need to download a fancy app! Any device with wifi and/or cell service, a web browser (like Chrome or Safari), and a camera will suffice.

The designers have had a lot of fun making the interactions come to life. We hope visitors to campus will take every opportunity for a fun selfie, be that just sitting on a bench and smoking a cigar with Moose Krause or playing at fisticuffs with a giant Fighting Irish leprechaun while an imperturbable Knute Rockne looks on benevolently.
